title: Digests
description: "Set low-priority mail aside into a daily or weekly bucket, and get it back as one recap email on your schedule instead of a stream of interruptions."

Some mail doesn't need your attention the moment it lands. Newsletters, receipts, and
notifications can wait for one quiet recap. A digest sets that mail aside and brings it back
on a schedule you set, as a single email grouped by sender, so it stays out of your inbox
until you're ready for it.

There are two digests: a **Daily** one and a **Weekly** one. Each is off until you turn it
on, and each has its own send time.

<Info>
Digests are Mailhopper's own, the same as reminders: setting one **doesn't move or change
anything in your mailbox**. The message stays where it is on the server; it's just hidden from
your inbox until the digest goes out.
</Info>

## No AI reads your mail

The recap is built by hand, not by a model. It lists each message's sender, subject, and a
short preview, grouped by who sent it, and nothing more. **Your mail is never read, sorted, or
summarized by AI**, in a digest or anywhere else in Mailhopper.

## Turn a digest on

Open **Settings → Rules** and select **Digest** to open its panel, then switch on **Daily**, **Weekly**, or both. For each
one, set the time it should go out (type any minute, like `8:30 AM`, or step it with the
arrows), and for the weekly digest pick the day of the week. Times use your own time zone.

<Note>
A digest you haven't turned on doesn't collect anything. If you try to add mail to a digest
that's off, Mailhopper offers **Turn on & add**, which switches the digest on and files the
message in one step, so mail is never quietly hidden with no way back to it.
</Note>

## Add mail to a digest

Three ways, depending on what you're filing: one message, several at once, or every message
from a sender from now on.

<Columns cols={3}>
  <Card title="One message" icon="envelope">
    Open the message, press <kbd>d</kbd> (or use the **⋯** menu), and pick **Daily** or
    **Weekly**.
  </Card>
  <Card title="Several at once" icon="layer-group">
    Select messages in the list, then choose **Digest · Daily** or **Digest · Weekly** in the
    selection bar.
  </Card>
  <Card title="A whole sender" icon="user-tag">
    Add a **Digest sender** in the Digest panel under **Settings → Rules**, and every future
    message from that sender is filed into the digest automatically.
  </Card>
</Columns>

<Tip>
A sender rule only files **new** mail as it arrives; it doesn't touch mail already in your
inbox. To digest mail you already have, use the one-message or bulk options above.
</Tip>

## See what's waiting

Each digest that's turned on gets its own view in the sidebar: **Daily digest** and **Weekly
digest**. Open one to read everything set aside for the next recap, and a count marks how much
has come in since the last one went out. You can act on any message here (reply, archive, and
so on) exactly as you would in the inbox.

<Note>
Digested mail is kept out of **All inboxes**, the unread count, and notifications, so it can't
distract you before the recap. It's always one click away in its digest view.
</Note>

## When the digest arrives

At the time you set, Mailhopper sends the recap from **digest@mailhopper.io** to your sign-in
address: one email, with each message listed under its sender and a link back to it in
Mailhopper. Newsletters and bulk mail are grouped separately from personal mail so the recap
stays easy to skim.

<Info>
The digest is sent by Mailhopper's servers, so it goes out on time whether or not your
computer is on. If nothing has collected since the last one, no empty email is sent; the
schedule just carries on to the next.
</Info>

To see the current recap before it's sent, open a digest view and choose **Preview digest
email**.

## Digests and notifications

Filing mail into a digest also silences it on your phone. A message routed to a digest doesn't
raise a new-mail notification when it arrives, and it stays out of the unread badge. That holds
whether a sender rule filed it or you filed it yourself.

Instead, you get one notification when the recap is ready, with a count of what's waiting. A
digest that collected forty messages notifies you once, the same as one that collected two.

<Note>
To silence that one as well, turn off **Digest ready** under **Settings → Notifications**. And
since an empty digest is never sent, nothing collected means no email and no notification.
</Note>

## Acting on digested mail

Acting on a message clears it from its digest, so it won't turn up in the view or the next
email. Reply to it, archive it, move it to Junk, or delete it, and it leaves the digest the
same as any inbox message would.

## Rules for whole senders

Manage your **Digest senders** in the **Digest** panel under **Settings → Rules**, next to the schedule and everything currently set aside.
Add a sender by email address or domain, choose Daily or Weekly, and remove a rule anytime.

When more than one rule could apply to a message, the stronger action wins: a blocked sender
goes to Trash, junk to Junk, and auto-archive to Archive, all before a digest rule is
considered. A digest only ever files mail that would otherwise reach your inbox. See
[Cleanup](/cleanup) for the other rule types.
